France’s General Election Results and Implications
France’s recent general election brought unexpected results, with a left-wing coalition, the New Popular Front, emerging as the party with the most seats. However, the coalition fell short of a majority in the National Assembly contest, leading to a hung parliament situation.
The New Popular Front secured 188 seats, while President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist Ensemble coalition gained 161 seats. The far-right party, National Rally (RN), led by Marine Le Pen, came in third with 141 seats. This outcome has raised concerns about the formation of new policies, including regulations related to cryptocurrencies.
Following the election, Macron must select a new prime minister to replace Gabriel Attal of the Renaissance party, who announced his resignation. The strategic cooperation among various political parties after the initial voting rounds aimed to prevent a split of the anti-RN vote, ultimately influencing the election results.
Challenges in Policy Formation
The hung parliament resulting from the election is likely to pose challenges in passing legislation, including regulations concerning cryptocurrencies. Mark Foster, the EU policy lead at the Crypto Council for Innovation, expressed concerns about the impact of the election results on policy development, particularly in the crypto sector.
The increased representation of far-left and far-right contingents in the new parliament could complicate the process of domestic policy-making, creating uncertainty and difficulties, while potentially limiting the president’s authority on international and European platforms.
France’s Crypto Regulatory Landscape
France has made significant advancements in the crypto sector, with the registration of 74 crypto companies last year, and an expected increase to 100. Regulators have actively sought to attract more digital asset businesses to the country.
Enforcement of the European Union’s comprehensive crypto asset legislation, such as the Markets in Crypto Asset (MiCA) rules on stablecoins, began at the end of June. The remaining crypto regulations are set to be implemented by the end of the year, aiming to provide a clear regulatory framework for the crypto industry in France.
